What is the secret of transformation and change?

In its purest essence, it is to first become aware, then to be able to visualise what we want to change, choose a new way of being and do new actions repeatedly and “Voila!” – you’ve transformed.

Step 1: Awareness: To be able to see through what used to be “transparent”, to become acutely self-aware of our lives and ourselves. Usually it takes a “breakdown” in our lives before we change our perspective. We have a “wake-up-call”

Haven’t you noticed that when in adversity, after the initial “Oh #%@$!” moment, we become extremely resourceful? Imagine you were driving down the highway, usually, you’d get home without even remembering how you got there, but… imagine you were driving home and had to pick someone up on the way and you suddenly hear the dreaded clunk of a flat tire, what do you do? You have your initial “Oh @&#^!” and then you pull over and look around and find that you have a phone, you let the person know to make other arrangements and not wait for you, then you remember you do in fact have a spare tire, and a jack – you realise have everything you need.

Point is, it is only after a breakdown that we stop and look around at what options we have. Before these “events”, we go through our lives on auto-pilot. We “keyed in” a destination a long time ago and we go about our lives morning to night on “repeat” mode until something happens, for example, we face a huge career disappointment, a health-scare or a relationship break-down that makes us stop in our tracks and look around, ask ourselves if we are indeed headed where we want to go – if the destination we had keyed-in – (which was usually influenced by society, upbringing, our parents’ desires for us and all the “shoulds”) is still truly where we want to go.

For some of us, it isn’t a huge breakdown but we wake up daily to a sense of loss, feeling de-motivated, wondering what is next and knowing that where we are is just not fulfilling. But we don’t always have to wait for something to happen to wake up.

We can choose to consciously change our lives and the first step is awareness, not just of ourselves and our life’s circumstances, but of “how we are seeing” ourselves and our various life situations and options. In Mastering Your Life, we get to know ourselves and expand our awareness, then we (re)design what a joyful and fulfilling journey towards a life well lived could look like, we see the programming that had been running us, we update the system and we take action and practice, practice, practice and then “Voila!”! In chapter 3, we get back to the drawing board, and connect with our purpose and soul’s yearning to (re)declare what we want and we look at where we are now with honesty, acceptance and self-compassion.
