I must be doing this wrong.”

You’re not alone.

In fact, this is the most common reason people give up on meditation.

We’ve absorbed the idea that meditation means silencing the mind. So when thoughts continue, planning, replaying conversations, making lists, remembering something from the nineties, we assume we’ve failed.

But thinking is not the problem. Learning this was life-changing for me. In that, if I had to attribute one thing I started doing that led to my transformation, it was meditating and when I learnt that thinking was not an obstacle, but in fact the way, I was able to meditate.

The mind thinks the way the heart beats. It generates movement. It wanders. It imagines. It analyses. Especially if you are a capable, high-functioning person with a full life. If you’re learning how to meditate when you can’t stop thinking, treat noticing as the practice, not a failure.

Meditation is not the elimination of thought. It is the shift in relationship to it.

In a simple practice, you sit. Thoughts appear. At some point, you realise you’ve been carried away. That moment of realising, that noticing, is not a mistake.

That noticing is the practice.

Neuroscience research suggests meditation alters activity in the brain’s default mode network.

You don’t fail at meditation. You return.

Every time you notice and gently come back to the breath, or to the present moment, you are strengthening awareness. Over time, something subtle happens. The nervous system learns that it does not need to grip everything so tightly. Thoughts still arise, but they feel less urgent. Less consuming. Having thoughts while you sit in meditation is often a sign that you are releasing, or unwiring, deeply stored stress.

For overthinkers, this reframe is everything.

You do not need to stop thinking to meditate effectively. You only need to recognise when you’ve wandered and come back.

Messy sessions are not detours. They are often signs that the system is unwinding. Restless sits, sleepy sits, emotional sits, these are not proof that meditation “isn’t working.” They are part of the human process of settling.

The goal is not a blank mind.

The goal is a steadier relationship with it.

If you’ve been trying to silence yourself and feeling frustrated, consider this: what if meditation was never about control?

What if it was about return?

If this resonates, I explore this approach more deeply in Unwired: Effortless Meditation for Busy Minds, a practical meditation book for people who assumed they weren’t built for it.

Unwired by Malti Bhojwani

If this resonates, I explore this approach more deeply in Unwired: Effortless Meditation for Busy Minds.

Can you meditate if you can’t stop thinking?

Yes.
