“You are a failure!”

How often have you heard this? In my life, I have heard it many times – from friends, parents & sometimes from within. The most dangerous is when we hear it from our inner voice. You are compared to a benchmark and then measured against it. Parents & teachers do it more often than anyone else.

When I was a kid, I read a quote in The READERS DIGEST which is instilled in my mind forever. I don’t remember writer but it went like this – “No No No No No…, the more number of No’s you hear, the closer you are to a Yes!”.It is so simple but so deeply powerful! It changed my life forever.

Why is failure so misunderstood.

People take failure as a point where they feel no good for themselves and their loved ones. This is where your own voice can come to your rescue. If you believe that failure is a point to stop then you have lost your path but if you think that you have learnt something worthwhile from this failure then it serves as a catalyst for your growth.

Remember it never ends until you stop!

The famous scientist of our time – Stephen Hawkins was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) when he was doing his PhD from Cambridge University. (Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge)? He was only given 2 years to live at the time. He is now 71. In the initial years he was scared that he will not be able to complete his PhD. But he struggled and fought his life battle and published something astonishing – A Brief History of time.

He failed many times and to add up his pain, his body was against it but he fought and he gave the world something to ponder for the rest of time. He uses his cheek muscle to interact with the world. Think about the perseverance and determination with which he has survived. Has he failed?

There are numerous examples of such failure stories that rose above it and achieved some impossible feats. People with strong mind and patience achieve super human results.

Did you know?

Gone With the Wind was rejected by 38 publishers. Legend has it that Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before finally getting financing for his dream of creating Walt Disney World. It’s also been said that KFC founder Colonel Sanders was rejected 1009 times before finding a taker for his chicken recipe. Imagine what the world would be like if they had given up after 1 or 2 or 3 failures?

Failure sounds cruel but it can be a life-changing event. If the Failure is accepted with grace & humanity and reworked using the correct path and pattern, nothing is impossible!

Failure can be devastating but it can be inspirational and it is the way we perceive it. As a kid we failed to understand our parents, mathematics, Science; as a youngster we failed to get good marks, get good girl friends / boyfriends, etc.; as a man we failed to understand our duty to our nation, parents, spouse, brothers/sisters, etc. So we can see that we keep on failing in life in different forms, at different levels, at different scenarios. But we always overcame it, for some we had to fight hard and for some we just sailed through.

Today, as I write this, I am able to recollect all my major failures in life and I am trying to do a retrospective analysis. Now I think if I would have done that in a different way then perhaps the result would have been different. I am only trying to help myself and in process others to understand the importance of FAILURE and get the desired result!

As the saying goes “Failure is stepping stone to success”, so be a champ and achieve the impossible!

The Importance of Letting Go – by Kalpana Patel – Eating Psychology Coach (ICF)

I often get asked about the relationship between weight and emotions. This article by fellow respected life coach Kalpana Patel sheds some light on it:

Every attachment, be it a relationship, a material object, a position is accompanied by fear. What happens when we evoke fear? We set into motion the physiology of stress.

We need to learn to let go. Letting go neither means ending a relationship, nor does it mean not enjoying the material things you have in life. It just means to always be mindful that we don’t attach ourselves to them. When we live in a state of detachment, we learn to live without any fear. Living in this state always keeps us in a state of balance because we start to focus on the fact that true happiness lies only within us. We have learnt to place the responsibility of keeping us happy on external relations and material possessions. When we do that, we are always afraid that if things change on the outside life will become difficult and we will no longer be happy.

What happens in a relationship where we attach ourselves too much? There is the fear of losing the relationship. When that fear sets in, we begin to try and control the lives of the people involved in that relationship, thinking that by doing so we can ensure that we don’t lose them. But what happens in reality is that, we are only doing the exact opposite of that. Suffocating others in our relationships only out of fear of losing them, takes them even farther away from us.

It takes time to feel comfortable spending time with oneself.

Gradually the more we do that and the more we enjoy being with ourselves, we create a beautiful relationship with ourselves and the outer world.

As an Eating psychology coach, I know that holding on and not letting go can also result into holding on to excess weight. When we are holding on to excess weight, we need to do some inner reflection about what is holding on to that excess weight representing? What are we holding on to that is leading to this holding on to the excess weight? Past grudges, fear, toxic relationships, our own limiting beliefs.

We need to let go all of these and embrace forgiveness. Forgiving others and ourselves brings us to a place of feeling an inner peace and enables us to be able to love and accept ourselves unconditionally and believe it or not, but that is the first step towards even letting go of excess weight.

Kalpana is a certified Life Coach from ICA and also a certified Eating Psychology Coach from The Institute for the Psychology of Eating. She works with people to help them love themselves “Now” as opposed to waiting to do that only when they “Get there” . Getting there could mean different things for different people. Grammarly_MenvsWomen_Writers_infographicI am not sharing this well researched finding just because my daughter’s novel “Enchanted Incognito” has just been published or because I too am a bit of a writer. Unfortunately since the early 19th century though, often, women have used male pseudonyms, just when they were beginning to get into literature and they felt that they would not be taken as seriously by readers as male authors. For example:

Louisa May Alcott: Prominent 19th century writer Louisa May Alcott began her career under the male pen name A. M. Barnard. You remember Little Women ( I did it for Literature in 1984)

Joanne Rowling: As author of the outrageously popular series Harry Potter, J. K. Rowling gained widespread popularity in a span of only a few years.

Nelle Harper Lee: Writing under the abbreviated name Harper Lee, Lee’s pen name does not necessarily disguise her identity, but does make her authorship fairly androgynous. Harper Lee became wildly famous for her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. I did this one for Literature too and only discovered today that he was a she! 🙂

But if thou had a looketh at the survey conducted by Grammarly  … you will see that if George Eliot were alive today, she would be better off sticking with her real name. After a ton of questions, over 3,000 respondents indicated that they believe women are better writers.

Men generally  “got to the point,” while we women were more likely to focus on “character development.”

Women were more likely to write about people, while men write more about things. We also are more adept at crafting longer sentences. 🙂

In conclusion, Grammarly stated that,  “Women tend to be more descriptive in their writing, and spend more time developing a greater variety of characters than men. Perhaps as a result, women are generally regarded to be better writers than men.”

We subconsciously evaluate a person’s capabilities and intelligence from their use of grammar and here’s proof. In a survey of the work of freelancers, Grammarly  showed in an info graphic, the relationship between a professional’s writing skills and the pay he could command.

As they summarized, it does not hurt to proofread your communication and to put your best foot forward – grammatically!
